The case for Ravello over the coast road. Palazzo Avino sits high above Amalfi in a 12th-century palazzo that has taken guests in one form or another since the 1880s, and the pink facade has given it its nickname. Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini are among the names in its history, which in Ravello is not unusual — the town has drawn that crowd since Wagner.
What altitude buys you is air and quiet. Ravello sits several hundred metres above the water, so you look down the whole coastline rather than out at a slice of it, and you escape the summer crush that makes Positano and Amalfi hard work in August. The 43 keys — 33 rooms and 10 suites — are done in a mix of period furniture, antique carpets and the ceramic tiles that are the region's signature, with the suites taking the terraces and the panorama.
The trade-off is that you are not on the sea, and the hotel answers that with the Clubhouse by the Sea at Marmorata: sunbathing platforms cut into the rock, a pool, a restaurant and direct access to the water, open May to October and reached by the hotel's shuttle. Rossellinis, the fine-dining room, holds a Michelin star. We use Palazzo Avino for people who want the coast without living in the middle of it.

The Clubhouse by the Sea at Marmorata is the hotel's answer to being up in the air: platforms cut into the rock for sunbathing, a small pool, a restaurant and direct access to the sea, open May to October with a hotel shuttle down and back. Up at the palazzo there is a pool in the gardens, a spa, and lemon terraces to walk. Ravello itself is the draw — Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone are a short walk, and the summer music festival plays on a stage built out over the cliff.
