The Privata Perspective

Kamalaya Koh Samui opened in November 2005 on a jungle hillside on Koh Samui's south coast, next to Laem Set, and it was built around the land rather than over it: Robert Powell's design kept the granite boulders, trees and streams as defining elements of the buildings, and the 76 rooms, suites and villas surround the Arjan Cave, where Buddhist monks meditated for centuries. It is a holistic wellness resort in the full sense, with more than a hundred wellness professionals, programmes from three nights to a Wellbeing Sabbatical of 21 nights or more, and a Longevity House and Cognitive House beside the Wellness Sanctuary.

Via Privata stayed in a Villa Sea View in September 2025. The integration with nature is the great strength, from the lotus-pond leisure pool to the boulder left in place in the gym; the healthy cooking at Soma and Amrita Café is outstanding; and the activity programme, most of it complimentary, suits active travellers who want to train as well as rest. The beach is the weak point: a reef-protected lagoon that is often too shallow to swim by day, with daytime high tides mainly from January to March.
