The Privata Perspective

The one that feels like staying with someone rather than at something. J.K. Place Capri has 22 rooms in a building above the beach at Marina Grande that started life as a private house and has been a hotel in one form or another since the 1880s. Michele Bönan, who has designed every J.K. Place, did the interiors in what is essentially 1950s yacht style: white and navy, rattan and dark wood, vintage art hung as though someone collected it rather than commissioned it.

The location divides people, and it is worth being honest about. You are down at the harbour rather than up in Capri town, which means you are five minutes from the ferry and the beach clubs, and a funicular or a short drive from the Piazzetta. For a first-time visitor who wants to walk out into the shops at midnight, that is a drawback. For anyone arriving by boat, using the sea, or simply wanting a quiet base away from the crush, it is the right side of the island.

The terrace is the thing. It runs the width of the hotel above the water, looking across the bay to Vesuvius and the mainland, and at dusk with the lanterns lit there is nowhere better to be sitting. JKitchen serves off it. Twenty-two rooms is small enough that the hotel runs on recognition rather than procedure, which on an island this busy counts for a lot.

Accommodations

Deluxe room

The entry category

Bönan's navy-and-white palette, marble bathrooms, and most of them facing the sea rather than the hillside

Junior Suite

Larger, with terrace

More space and a private terrace over the bay — the sweet spot in a hotel this small

Penthouse & Suites

The top of the house

The widest views across to Vesuvius and the mainland, and the terraces you would happily eat every meal on

Dining

JKitchen

Mediterranean

Seasonal, organic-leaning Mediterranean cooking served out on the terrace above the water. Small enough that they will cook around you rather than at you

Lounge bar & terrace

Aperitivo

The terrace at dusk, looking across the bay with the lanterns lit. This is the reason to book down at the harbour rather than up in town

Spa & Wellness

A pool and relaxation area, a small spa, and the beach at Marina Grande directly below. Being at the harbour is the practical advantage: boats leave from here, so a day around the island, out to the Faraglioni or across to Positano starts at the bottom of the steps rather than after a drive down. The funicular up to the Piazzetta runs from the marina, and the hotel arranges the car for anyone who would rather not.

When to Go

May–June

Warm, quiet at the harbour, and the sea calm enough for boat days

September

Warmest water and the ferries emptier; the best month here

July–August

Marina Grande is busy with day-trippers by day and empties at night — which suits this hotel better than most
