The Privata Perspective

The hotel Capri is organised around. It began in 1845 as a sanatorium built by a British doctor, George Sidney Clark — qui si sana, here one heals — and became a hotel in 1861. Giò Ponti added a Liberty-style theatre in 1929. Nearly two centuries on it is still the address on the island, and its position is a large part of why: a minute's walk from the Piazzetta, at the head of Via Camerelle and the shopping street, so you step out of the front door into the middle of Capri rather than travelling to it.

At 148 rooms it is much the largest hotel on this page, and it feels like a grand hotel rather than a villa — long white corridors, a proper lobby, and the unhurried competence that comes with running the same building for well over a century. The rooms are calmer than the exterior suggests: white walls, white floors, and the colour supplied by the sea and the pines outside the window.

The Quisi Bar terrace out front is the reason non-residents come. From about seven in the evening it is where Capri assembles, and watching it from a table with a drink is one of the island's set pieces. If your idea of Capri involves being in the thick of it rather than hiding from it, this is the hotel.

Accommodations

Classic & Superior room

The entry categories

White-on-white rooms looking over the gardens or the town; quieter than the sea-facing side and considerably cheaper

Deluxe room, sea view

The category to ask for

Balconies over the pines to the water — on an island this dense, an open view is what you are paying for

Junior Suite & Suite

The upper categories

Separate sitting areas and the larger terraces, several looking straight down the Certosa side of the island

Dining

Colombaia

Italian

The main restaurant, Italian cooking with a serious wine list, and the easier of the two rooms for a long lunch

Quisi Bar terrace

Aperitivo

The most famous terrace on Capri and the island's evening ritual. You do not need to be staying here to sit at it, which is rather the point

Poolside dining

Italian, informal

By the outdoor marble pool in the garden, and the sensible option after a morning on a boat

Spa & Wellness

A large outdoor zero-edge marble pool in the gardens, and a spa with sauna, Turkish bath and a heated indoor pool. There are tennis courts and a salon, which on Capri is not a given — most hotels here are too tightly hemmed in by the town to offer either. The gardens are unusually generous for a hotel inside Capri town, and the Certosa di San Giacomo and the Gardens of Augustus are a short walk away.

When to Go

May–June

Warm, in flower, and the Piazzetta still manageable in the evenings

September

Our pick — the sea at its warmest and the day-trippers thinning after Ferragosto

July–August

Capri at full volume. Wonderful if that is what you came for; book everything well ahead
