The Privata Perspective
The view is the argument. Grand Hotel Tremezzo sits on the western shore looking straight across at Bellagio and the mountains behind it, which is the postcard everyone has in their head when they say Lake Como. It opened in 1910, built by Enea Gandola and Maria Orsolini for the belle-époque traveller, and it is still run by a family — the De Santis, who went on to restore Passalacqua up the shore.
Ninety rooms and suites, plus a villa, spread through the art-nouveau main house and its annexes. The signature is the floating pool: a swimming pool built out on the water itself, so you swim on the lake rather than beside it. Below it, T Beach was rebuilt in 2020 in homage to the 1950s Italian Riviera, all orange and white parasols facing the water.
Tremezzo is the more sociable of the lake's grande dames — livelier than Villa d'Este, more of a hotel than Passalacqua, and the best base if you actually want to be out on the water every day. Villa Carlotta and its botanical gardens are next door; the ferries to Bellagio and Varenna leave from the pier in front.

Three pools, more than any other house on this shore: Water on the Water, which floats out on the lake in front of the beach; the Flowers Pool set in its own gardens; and a heated indoor infinity pool in the spa. The T Spa runs across several floors with an ESPA partnership and a private spa suite that can be taken exclusively. Villa Carlotta's botanical gardens are immediately next door, so the garden visit that everyone else reaches by boat is a walk from the door. The hotel's boats run the shore and the Bellagio crossing.
