Aman Venice
16th-century Palazzo Papadopoli on the Grand Canal — Tiepolo frescoes intact
The Privata Perspective
Aman Venice occupies the 16th-century Palazzo Papadopoli, one of the Grand Canal's most magnificent palazzi and one of the last to retain its original Giambattista Tiepolo ceiling frescoes intact. Jean-Michel Gathy's restoration treated the building with extraordinary sensitivity — 18th-century stuccowork, gilded mirrors, original terrazzo floors, and museum-quality artwork remain exactly where Venetian craftsmen placed them centuries ago.
Arriving by private water taxi through the palazzo's own canal entrance — ducking beneath a low stone arch into a private courtyard that opens to reveal the building's gilded interior — is one of travel's genuinely unforgettable moments. The 24 rooms are deliberately limited in number to preserve the palazzo's residential character, and each is individually decorated with period antiques and original artwork.
Aman Venice's location on the Grand Canal places it equidistant between the Rialto Bridge and the Accademia, with the entirety of Venice's artistic and architectural heritage within walking distance. The hotel arranges private after-hours visits to the Doge's Palace, gondola rides through Venice's quieter back canals, and excursions to the glass-blowing ateliers of Murano and the lace workshops of Burano. The garden courtyard — a rare luxury in Venice — provides a serene dining setting that feels impossibly private in this most public of cities.
