The RuMa Hotel and Residences

A design-led boutique hotel steps from the Petronas Towers, where Malaysian craft, rattan and warm woods meet a cantilevered infinity pool with skyline views. 'RuMa' plays on rumah — Malay for 'home' — and that is exactly how it feels: intimate, residential and quietly stylish.

Arrival & Design

The RuMa comes from Urban Resort Concepts — the group behind The Datai Langkawi — and it carries the same design intelligence into the heart of Kuala Lumpur. The lobby announces the tone with a dramatic double-height spiral staircase, and throughout the hotel the references are local and tactile: tin-mining heritage, batik, handcraft, and warm timber rather than the cool marble-and-glass sameness of most big-city five-stars. It is a boutique property in feel — intimate, personal, more like a stylish private residence than a corporate tower — and all the better for it. And the location, moments from the Petronas Towers and KLCC, could hardly be better.

The Room

The rooms are among the most characterful in the city. Rattan furniture, pale-wood panelling, lantern-style lampshades and screen doors nod gently to traditional Malaysian homes, while the clean lines and excellent tech keep everything firmly contemporary. They are generous in size, warm in tone, and beautifully lit. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the KL skyline — ask for a higher floor facing the Petronas Towers — and the bathrooms continue the theme with warm stone and considered detailing.

The Pool, Bar & Dining

The signature is the cantilevered infinity pool, clad in shimmering gold-and-black tiles, that juts out from the sixth floor with a sweeping view over the Golden Triangle to the Petronas Towers. It is one of the best hotel pools in the city, and the adjacent Santai pool bar — day beds, cocktails, skyline — is where you'll want to spend the golden hour. Dining centres on Atas, the modern-Malay restaurant reached by climbing that grand spiral staircase to the mezzanine above the lobby. Rich woods, curved wicker and a warm glow set the scene for elevated Malaysian cooking that leans confidently into local flavour.

Exploring Kuala Lumpur

The RuMa's position in the Golden Triangle puts the best of KL within walking distance. The Petronas Towers and the KLCC park are a short stroll; the shopping and street food of Bukit Bintang are close by; and the whole city — from colonial-era landmarks to the temples and stalls of Chinatown — is easily reached. It is a genuinely walkable base in a city that rewards wandering, with the hotel a calm retreat to return to at the end of the day.

The Verdict

The RuMa proves that Kuala Lumpur can do intimate, design-led luxury as well as any city in Asia. Characterful rooms rooted in Malaysian craft, a spectacular skyline pool, strong local dining and an unbeatable location add up to one of KL's most desirable stays — and a refreshing alternative to the city's larger, more corporate towers.
