France's Two Greatest Ski Palaces: Cheval Blanc Courchevel vs Les Airelles

Two Palaces share the same mountain in Courchevel 1850 — and could not be more different. One is an intimate, contemporary jewel-box; the other a grand Austro-Hungarian fairy tale. Here is how to choose.

Courchevel 1850 is the most rarefied address in the Alps, and it holds a rivalry without equal in mountain hospitality. Within a few minutes of one another stand two of France's official Palaces — Cheval Blanc and Les Airelles — each a contender for the finest ski hotel in the world. Clients ask us to choose between them more than for any other pair of properties we book.

The honest answer is that they are not really competing for the same guest. They share a mountain, a snow-sure season, and an almost absurd level of service, yet their personalities are opposites. Cheval Blanc is intimate, contemporary and grown-up — a 36-key jewel-box from the house of LVMH, home to what many consider the greatest restaurant in the Alps. Les Airelles is grand, maximalist and theatrical — an Austro-Hungarian fantasy of carved wood and stained glass, and the most magical address in the Alps for families travelling at the very top of the market.

Below, how the two compare — and how to decide.

The Selection

Cheval Blanc Courchevel - Courchevel 1850, France
01

Cheval Blanc Courchevel

The intimate, contemporary jewel-box

$$$$$ · Courchevel 1850, France

The original Cheval Blanc Maison, opened in 2006, is where the LVMH hotel story began — and it remains the most design-literate hotel on the mountain. Just 36 rooms and suites, finished in a soft, contemporary palette, with ski-in/ski-out access to the Saulire slopes and a Guerlain spa. The scale is deliberately small: this is a hotel that feels like a private chalet run by a brigade who remember your name by the second morning.

Its trump card is Le 1947, Yannick Alléno's three-Michelin-starred restaurant — five tables, twenty-odd covers, open only in winter, and for many serious gastronomes a destination in its own right. Cheval Blanc is for couples, for design lovers, and for the traveller who wants the Alps' finest dining a lift ride from their suite. It is grown-up, hushed and exacting.

Cheval Blanc Courchevel — 3

The most refined, adult and design-led stay in Courchevel — and home to arguably the best restaurant in the Alps.

Book it for: Couples, gastronomes and design lovers who want intimacy over grandeur.

Les Airelles, Courchevel

The grand Austro-Hungarian fairy tale

$$$$$ · Courchevel 1850, France

Les Airelles is the grande dame of Courchevel — an opulent, gloriously maximalist Palace of carved wood, stained glass and Tyrolean fantasy at the foot of the Bellecôte piste. Where Cheval Blanc whispers, Les Airelles performs: a children's village and dedicated kids' programme, a vast pool, a La Mer spa, and 44 rooms and suites that feel like a Mitteleuropa stage set in the best possible way.

Dining is led by Pierre Gagnaire pour Les Airelles, the chef's two-Michelin-starred table, alongside the Savoyard classics of Le Coin Savoyard. This is the address for multi-generational families and for travellers who want the romance and theatre of the Alps turned up to full volume. It is grand, warm and unapologetically magical.

When to Book

Both Palaces open only for the winter season (roughly December to early April) and the best suites — especially over Christmas, New Year and February half-term — are reserved a year ahead. We recommend booking 9–12 months out for peak weeks, and securing Le 1947 at Cheval Blanc as soon as the dates are confirmed.
